ECAL Milan 2014: ECAL & Camper present the film "Training"

ECAL Milan 2014: ECAL & Camper present the film "Training",09.04.2014,Cinema Arlecchino, Milan For the Milan International Furniture Fair 2014, Camper, the Majorcan shoe brand, and the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present an exceptional multidisciplinary project at the Arlecchino Cinema on Wednesday 9 April (from 9 pm to midnight). Students of the Master Product Design have made a shop, under the supervision of Bethan Laura Wood, which has been used as the set for “Training”, a short film directed by Jan Czarlewski, a graduate of the ECAL Bachelor Cinema. Images HD The projection of this fiction film is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, who is also a graduate of the Bachelor Cinema. All communication materials for this event (graphic design and photography) have been undertaken by former students of ECAL. “ The basic idea was to create a full-size Camper shop in the Studio Cinema of ECAL,and shoot a short film,” explains Ramón Úbeda, the person in charge of the project at Camper. “We wanted this project to be multidisciplinary and for it to bring together many of the different skills taught at the ECAL, especially the Cinema option, that makes this school a unique training centre of its kind.” The first stage was having the students of the Master Product Design create a mock-up of a shop. Under the supervision of the British designer Bethan Laura Wood, they have created an original set, an authentic design piece with two-way mirrors – a special effect that is vital to the script – and shaped like a huge shoe box. “ What is there to film in a Camper shop? To discover the film s concept we were inspired by the company philosophy: humour and jokiness”, reveals Jan Czarlewski, director of this short film lasting around 12 minutes. With that in mind, the film could only be a comedy. The story is about the first day at work of a young stammering, awkward and stressed salesman, who is trained by the shop manager, who is himself an anxious person… This short fictional piece is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, narrating the process of putting together the whole project, from making the shop to creating the communication materials, done by Romain Collaud, graduate of the Bachelor in Graphic Design at the ECAL. ECAL Milano 2014: «Avant-garde Retro» with Cassina

ECAL Milano 2014: «Avant-garde Retro» with Cassina,08–13.04.2014,Showroom Cassina, via Durini 16, Milan During the Milan International Furniture Fair from 8 to 13 April 2014, Cassina presents a selection of projects by ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne at its showroom in via Durini 16. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Maralunga sofa, designed for the Italian brand by Vico Magistretti, the students from the Master Product Design programme have developed new sofa projects based on this icon s chassis. The project was directed by Alexis Georgacopoulos and Tomas Kral. Images HD As a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Maralunga sofa, Cassina challenged 20 international sudents from the ECAL Master Product Design programme to design the sofa of the future starting from the Maralunga chassis. The brief? Simple, comfort first and foremost. The students got their initial inspiration for the project during a visit to the Cassina factory in Meda where they were able to get a feel for the history of the brand and observe production techniques. Following this visit, various workshops with the ECAL Director, Alexis Georgacopoulos, and the designer Tomas Kral were organised, as well as two analysis meetings with the Cassina R&D Centre, which resulted in 20 integrated projects. The work entailed a semester of study, research and development and led to some surprising proposals. During the Milan International Furnitue Fair 2014, Cassina will showcase the two winning prototypes, one by Qiyun Deng, a Chinese girl born in 1983, and the other by Jin Eum, a Korean girl born in 1987, together with models chosen from 6 other projects. A special display dedicated to the world of Maralunga will also on show at the historic Cassina showroom in Milan. Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography" Project
Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography"

Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography" The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. An art school is an image factory. New generations of artists are constantly emerging, joining the marathon of exhibitions and publications from the very first years of their creative lives. In this context, the art school has become a particularly attractive place for ambitious young artists.  This book features a selection of works by photography students from one of the world s top art universities: ECAL, in Lausanne, Switzerland, an institution commited to training artists, graphic designers, industrial designers, typographers, filmmakers, interaction designers, and photographers. Here, students create freely, question the traditional genres, explore new territories, and experiment with and beyond their media. The works revealed by the “ECAL Photography” exhibition and collected in the eponymous book are bound to trace the beginnings of innovative practices in photography. Meat Project
Meat

Meat Marcel and Suzanne are curious as to what human flesh tastes like. They decide try it out. Fiction / 8min Synopsis Marcel and Suzanne are curious as to what human flesh tastes like. They decide try it out. Workshop "One painting, one scene" Félix Vallotton retrospective at the Grand Palais This year s workshop had the particularity of confining us to a single location: the Château de la Sarraz, and of having a relationship - whatever it may be - with the work of Félix Vallotton. The films made in collaboration with the theater students of La Manufacture were sometimes inspired by this and sometimes opposed to it. Two films illustrate these possibilities in their own way. Commentary Meat has its origin in a still life by the painter. The precision of Christophe Saber s text, its restrained actors, its formalist and pictorial cutting, its contrasting light create a film that comes as close as possible to the graphic work of Félix Vallotton s illustrations. Several shots could be part of the series of famous black and white engravings. The film gives the cruel impression that even humor is a blade... splitting the flesh. Night's dream Project
Night's dream

Night s dream A night party like others. Julie is looking for her friend Sara. Fiction / 7min Synopsis A night party like others. Julie is looking for her friend Sara. Commentaire Night s Dream is inspired exactly by one of the painter s paintings: pictorially first (frontal staging) and in the choice of characters (two women, one asleep, the other sitting on the same bed). From this silent painting, staging a secret that is not told, he creates a situation of speech, even of vaudeville. Josua Hotz adds a protagonist who will modify the rigid framework of the painting. The characters are embodied in their reality, their fragility (it is the same actress who plays both roles and it is interesting to see the difference in "acting"), and the image, nuanced, moving, takes us into an impressionist world, the opposite of Vallotton s art. In the end, the film conceals a poetry, an incongruity a thousand miles from its starting point. Hippolyte Girardot / Actor, director Night s dream on Swissfilms.ch

Souvenir items for The Olympic Museum,07.01.2014,Olympic Museum, Lausanne To mark the reopening of The Olympic Museum, the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has been working on designing souvenir items for the Museum shop, created by Bachelor of Industrial Design students after a workshop with Hector Serrano, a Spanish designer based in Valencia. Two of these projects are set to go on sale in the Museum shop shortly. HD PICTURES ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos is pleased to present the projects produced by second-year Bachelor of Industrial Design students for The Olympic Museum. In December, The Museum reopened after a makeover that will allow it to offer its visitors new experiences after 20 years of existence. To celebrate this event, The Olympic Museum invited the ECAL to work on a series of souvenir items for its shop. The aim was to create a collection of souvenirs which reflect the spirit of Olympism and The Museum in a contemporary, fun way. Using his experience in this area, Spanish designer Hector Serrano gave the students some tips on what makes a successful souvenir item. The students came up with around 30 proposals, which were submitted to a jury composed of Olympic Museum and IOC employees. Two of the proposals (by Camille Ringenbach and Emil Hjorth-Rohde) were selected, and will be on sale soon at the Museum shop. www.olympic.org Projects (videos and descriptions) Little Audience, ECAL/Camille Ringenbach “Moo Box” containing different sounds (applause, shouts and cries of disappointment by spectators) to create your own mini Olympic audience. Julien Savioz – Warming by the Devil s Fire Warming by the Devil s Fire recounts the life of Robert Johnson. Considered today as one of the fathers of early Blues Music, he died in fact anonymously in 1938 at the age of 27 and fell into oblivion. It was only during the 60 s that white folk and rock musicians rediscovered his 2 albums and started being interested in his life. In 30 years though, his story had been told so many times and in so many different ways that it had turned into a tale. Theories, white fascination and romantic visions completed the myth, to which – as a European fan – I decided to contribute by telling my own version. He has to spend his easter holidays at his country house, with his mother. He ll meet Céline again, his childhood friend. It s been a long time since they haven t seen each other. She s changed, and him as well... Commentaire Age of fire has the spontaneity and freshness of the beautiful age with its innocence, its wounds and its laws. Or how, suddenly, as one enters adult life, conditioning and education become barriers. Léo Haddad explores this frontier, questioning it until it subtly cracks. In the places of childhood, the director, close to his actors, stretches a fragile thread between two worlds that had given the illusion of being similar and that during the vacations discover themselves to be completely different. Burns Project

Mélanie Rappo – Burns Juliette lives in a small country town. The eighteen year old adolescent is about celebrate their three and a half year anniversary with her boyfriend.  Her hopes of a perfect date are shattered and make way for a violent break up. Fiction / 16min Synopsis Juliette lives in a small country town. The eighteen year old adolescent is about celebrate her "three and half year" anniversary with her boyfriend. Her hopes of a perfect date are shattered and make way for a violent break up. Commentaire Melanie s film resembles her and that surely is what attaches me to it in the first place. It s so devious the way movies make you discover who you are, who you thought you weren t and ultimately who you would like to be. Melanie is a discreet and stubborn woman, secretive and proud, shy and intense. It s hard to know where she s taking you, but she holds your hand. Burns tells in its own way the dark side of the love relationship when you are a girl who is not "obvious" and that you would like to love normally, bourgeoisly. The heroine is a princess; she lives in a castle with a pet except that everything is messed up: the dog runs away and the mother says slimy and disgusting things with her mouth. The princess loves a prince, but he is also a mess: he says disgusting things with his slimy mouth, but he kisses so well. The beauty of the film - and its difficult bet - is not to explain much and especially not to link, for example, the death of a hedgehog and the undressing, a knife on the skin and the word caress instead of the word blow. And we remain locked up like the princess in the dungeon of love. Hippolyte Girardot / Actor, director

The little prince in the land that passes by draws an intimate portrait of this young man by showing the life behind the stardom status. Synopsis Stéphane Lambiel is a famous figure skater and a two-time world champion. Today, he goes from galas to galas on a weekly basis. The little prince in the land that passes by draws an intimate portrait of this young man by showing the life behind the stardom status. The idea for this documentary came to me when I met Stéphane Lambiel. I was moved by the much more humble image of him that he let me see that goes beyond his glimmering branded image. With my little camera in hand, I decided to follow him while he was on tour in Russia and east-europe while remaining in the shadows of the ice rink, in a corner of hotel rooms and cars. Commentaire What can you do with your life when you have been a double world champion figure skater and have retired at the age of 25? Carina Freire, in The Little prince in the land that passes by, reveals with modesty and rigor the wanderings of Stéphane Lambiel, a former champion, who skates in galas and skating shows all over the world. A sharp, lively, sometimes funny film, which forcefully mixes grace and prosaic. Frédéric Mermoud / Director

Kaspar Schiltknecht – Bonne Espérance The routine life of Stéphanie, a support worker, ill at ease with herself, but totally dedicated to her work, is overturned by her experience with Tamara, a “white trash Lolita” who is at war with the entire world. Fiction / 19min Synopsis A support worker in a hostel for young women at risk, Stéphanie s whole life revolves round her work. Her commitment is shaken when Tamara, a 16 year old runaway, is brought back by the police. Trying to deal with the institution s tight surveillance and hostility of the other girls, Tamara tries to make friends with Stéphanie, who becomes increasingly unsettled by the girl s desire for closeness. Commentaire Bonne Espérance tells with intelligence and finesse the story of the meeting of two women that everything should have opposed. Kaspar Schiltknecht succeeds, with gentleness and grace, in filming the ages, the states of the body, the desires for freedom and guilt, the beauty and the unattractive, and reveals a young actress with a confounding naturalness who seduces her educator almost in spite of herself. ECAL MIlano 2013: "Savoir-Faire",08–14.04.2013,Spazio Orso 16, Milan The “Savoir-Faire” exhibition showcases a selection by ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos, featuring projects in Product and Industrial Design, Art Direction, Photography, Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design by ECAL Bachelor and Master students. Following a successful experience at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan last year, ECAL offers, for the second time, an exhibition which introduces photography, graphic design, art direction and interaction design amidst “traditional” product & industrial design works. “At ECAL there is no single way to create, although we do take to heart such values as precision, professionalism, innovation – and even humour. Our outmost objective is to develop different skills specific to each programme, but also to integrate this diverse know-how in the cross-disciplinary fashion which has established our school s reputation. With this exhibition we wanted to show that our students “know how” to contribute with passion to each field developed at ECAL”, says ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos.

Low-Tech Factory Event
Low-Tech Factory

Low-Tech Factory,21.03–21.04.2013,Hôtel Droog, Amsterdam ECAL presents "Low-Tech Factoy" at the Droog Hotel in Amsterdam. On this occasion, Alexis Georgacopoulos, and Chris Kabel, professor at ECAL, will participate in a debate (April 21 at 7pm) to answer this question: "Why are so many young designers making machines these days?" Low-Tech Factory is a project by ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Switzerland. In a workshop led by Chris Kabel and Thomas Kral, students from Bachelor in Industrial Design and Master in Product Design created a series of simple but sophisticated machines that not only create an experience, but actually produce finished goods—hats, mirrors, bags, toys, lamps and popcorn. With this project, the theme of auto-production is raised. Recently we have seen countless designers make their own machines. And while it often seems the machine becomes more important than the result, in this case, the design of the machine and its resulting product are in balance. The exhibition presents six machines with videos. At the opening on March 21st, the designers will demonstrate the machines themselves. The question—why are designers making so many machines—still remains. With this question, we will enter into a debate on March 21st with Alexis Georgacopoulos, director of ECAL, Chris Kabel, Joanna van der Zanden and Joris Laarman. The evening will be moderated by Tracy Metz. ----- Students projects "Oncle Sam" by ECAL/Laurent Beirnaert, Pierre Bouvier, Paul Tubiana The "Oncle Sam" machine processes grains one by one, focusing on the transformation of corn into popcorn. An explosion that usually occurs en masse is here isolated so that the spectacle can be enjoyed. Satisfaction is at once visual and gastronomic. "Rocking-Knit" by ECAL/Damien Ludi, Colin Peillex "Rocking-Knit" is a new interpretation of the rocking chair. It offers its user productive moments of relaxation. The to-and-fro movement of this armchair knits hats for the winter and requires no exertion whatsoever. "Stamp" by ECAL/Anaïs Benoit Dignac, Arthur Didier, Edrris Gaaloul "Stamp" is a production line that converts simple plastic trellis into portable lamps. The steps in the manufacturing process are carried out along a rail: the plastic is heated, shaped, and finally crimped over an inexpensive bulb. The result of this ingenious production is a portable lamp complete with a graphic lightweight shade. "Swing" by ECAL/Léonard Golay, Camille Rein "Swing" is a giant punch that transforms pieces of stretch tarpaulin into extendable openwork sacks. The items are produced by the weight of the user who, gyrating, executes a production movement resembling a dance step. "Animal Growth" by ECAL/Eleonora Castellarin, Moises Hernandez Through the use of simple hand tools, this fun worktop breaks down the production process of animal toys manufactured from expanded foam. Cutting, gluing, filling and observing the animals takes shape before your very eyes. "Marbelous" by ECAL/Anurag Etchepareborda, Flora Fixy Using a surface transfer method known as “marbling”, the Marbelous transforms simple objects by coating them with a thin layer of marbled motifs. With a few drops of paint, surprising colour effects are transferred to metallic mirrors, giving your reflection an unexpected impression.

Multimodal Publishing Project
Multimodal Publishing

Multimodal Publishing The sphere of mass media is deeply transformed by the irruption of network technologies. Thus, the editorial field of magazines faces an increasing phenomenon of fragmentation and differentiation. New editorial projects and new “communities of readers” appear, characterized by an unprecedented and innovative structure of diffusion and reception. These media are a paradox : they are at the same time products of high editorial complexity while being based on a restricted editorial structure. In this context, Multimodal Publishing aims at : developing new forms of magazines able to take part, even to anticipate the changes of the considered media ; characterizing the new design space authorized by this new press magazine mainly influenced by its various actors ; revealing and describing the new competences to be developed in a specific way, for and on behalf of the designers. Atrocity Exhibition Project
Atrocity Exhibition

Atrocity Exhibition John Graham Ballard s literary technique influenced by Surrealism, his explicit or indirect references to artworks or artpractices and the relationships the author had with the british Pop artists attest that The Atrocity Exhibition has an affinity with the discipline of contemporary art. The aim of this research project was to design the parameters of an exhibition dedicated to The Atrocity Exhibition. The student-researchers inquired into the status of exhibitions - such as documentary, historical or thematical – and into more recent experimental displays. They decided to conceive an exhibition that articulated documentary restitution and creation. The few selected documents were used to blur the notions of context and reference in order to echo with the ambiguous media criticism in Ballard s work. The display structure created for the exhibition points towards devices as eclectic as contemporary commercial fairs, world s fairs or  the Independent Group s Pavilions, in an elliptic and entropic gesture involving oblivion, decay, mutation and sedimentation. A book gathers all the lectures by invited experts, the interventions by the professors and the results of the sudents research in the conception of this exhibition. In 2012, they went to Lisbon with the director Teresa Villaverde and the sound engineer Vasco Pimentel. During two weeks of complete immersion, the students went to meet these filmmakers and their territory. In places they have often filmed, the neighborhoods of Intendente and Moraria, Teresa Villaverde and Vasco Pimentel explained their working method, from the location scouting to the first shootings. They also discussed the different technical constraints inherent to filming (sound, image). The students worked as a team in these neighborhoods, sketching a story in "real life" situations. These films were entirely shot, edited and presented on location.

Des yeux partout

Caroline Cuénod – Des yeux partout This ageless woman who tracks every CCTV camera in the city, would she aggree to go to Monaco? Radio-active Project
Radio-active

Nathan Hofstetter – Radio-active A film about my illness and my stay at a psychiatric hospital. Documentary / 27min Synopsis "I couldn t say exactly how it started. What I do remember is being on a film set, sleeping less and less, feeling the anxiety rise; then, one morning, watching television with the strong feeling that it was me who was going to marry Kate Middletone and not Prince William. This is called a psychotic decompensation. But that I learned later. " Radio-active, tells "from within" the territory of this disease. Commentaire Following a psychotic decompensation, Nathan spends a season in hell. From inside his head, itself encircled by the walls of the hospital, he tells us about a world where reality no longer has a place. This experimental approach allowed me to explore new avenues of research,” explains Christophe Guberan. Indeed, this project is based on a totally new experimental process which, using a printer, a simple sheet of tracing paper and water, creates a transition from 2D to 3D, generating tiny volumes in just a few minutes.

The Ambassador & me A son, a father. The first one holds a camera; the second one holds the title ambassador. The camera trembles, the ambassador remains. Documentary / 16min Synopsis His Excellency, the plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Belgian Crown sacrificed his entire life for his country. I thus, decide to come to Brussels to try to make up for lost time. Commentaire A son, a father. The first holds a camera, the other is an ambassador. A great game of evasions where the son, by dint of (voluntarily) getting his feet wet, manages to draw a portrait of his father (and his own, as a result...). Another Game Project
Another Game

Jean-Guillaume Sonnier – Another Game Starting with a role play and then falling in love, Benoît is going to lose everything… Fiction / 19min Synopsis Looking for a flat to rent, Benoît is staying temporarily at a hotel. Having seen that flats are more easily rented to couples than singles, Benoît comes up with the plan to have Jeanne, his neighbour, act as his girlfriend. Through this role play, Benoît will fall under the charm of this young lady who is keen on horse betting, and will let himself be led into an amorous bet that will ruin him. Comments Another Game is a modest and playful film, an elegant cross between a young skater with a broken leg and a mysterious young woman who bets on the racetrack. With its contrasting black and white and lively dialogue, the film pays homage to the lightness of 1960s cinema and brilliantly affirms its belief in romance. Born behind the stones Project
Born behind the stones

Born behind the stones From the photographs of my family and that of my boyfriend, I realize the portrait of two clans that everything opposes. And between the two: me. Documentary / 7min Synopsis Based on photographs of my relatives and my companion s relatives, I have portrayed two families that could hardly be more different. My parents were farmers in Portugal before immigrating to Switzerland in the 1980s. His parents are Swiss academics. And I am somewhere in between. Comment Born behind the stones, that is to say poor, in the Portuguese countryside. To leave for Switzerland, full of hope. To work hard, to rise socially. To want the best for your child. Let the years infuse and wait for your daughter (the director) to revisit the family album. With irony. Verities 01 Project
Verities 01

Matthew Fenton & Haakon Spencer – Verities 01 Verities is an independent biannual publication of thought, observation and reflection, giving equal focus to visual arts and literature. Verities explores new ways of seeing the most ordinary and overlooked situations, revealing the arresting and irrational in the everyday. The ability to disorient and estrange through a subjects illumination makes for a potentially explosive catalyst that sits at the heart of Verities. In each issue artists and authors explore a new theme through artworks, photography, design, fashion, essays and short stories. Finding the new in the old and celebrating the old in the new, rescuing beauty from vulgarity, and pushing social issues to the fore. Verities makes intellectual content accessible, yet is not afraid to challenge its readers. Based in London with an international outlook this is a publication that is subjective in its authorship and honest in its approach. Taking on the mantle of producing a publication for the ultra observant. verities.co.uk Verities is an independent biannual publication of thought, observation and reflection, giving equal focus to visual arts and literature. Vrai/Semblable Project
Vrai/Semblable

Vrai/Semblable Under the direction of filmmaker Emmanuel Salinger, students were asked to produce a fiction or documentary film of less than 10 minutes in length based on the document written in a writing workshop. Under the direction of filmmaker Emmanuel Salinger, students were asked to produce a fiction or documentary film of less than 10 minutes in length based on the document written in a writing workshop. The film had to feature a fictional or real-life actor who functions as a double of the author, even though he or she is a stranger. This character had to differ in many ways from the student (social background, age, political opinion) but share with him or her a fundamental truth (values, history, neurosis, etc.). Finally, the film had to highlight this common area without it being the main object of the film.

Cinema 3D Project
Cinema 3D

Cinema 3D Generally perceived as a simple way to immerse the spectator, 3D cinema is also often regarded just as a marketing argument. Consequently, studies on the implications of stereoscopy on cinematographic language are still very rare. Thus, the main goal of the project is to understand how 3D can be used in a film as an instrument for narration. Consequently, the general objective of the project is to study the influence of 3D on : the impact of images on the spectator the framing, cutting, montage and post-production of a film the creation of special effects. To this end, several particular objectives were defined : Enriching the state of the art related to 3D cinema in through readings, interviews, film analysis and meetings with experts. Making a synthesis and making accessible the theoretical basis necessary to the comprehension of 3D images. Experimenting in real or virtual images the formal and aesthetic aspects of 3D images (fixed image, movements of camera, montage, distance between centres, angulation,…). Studying more specifically how 3D can create emotion and not only feeling. Kwa Heri Mandima Project
Kwa Heri Mandima

Kwa Heri Mandima Childhood pictures, the departure from Zaire when I was 10, my friends Watumu, Angi and Amosi, the big shift from a culture to another, identity, memories and footage... Documentary / 11min Synopsis Through the rediscovery of archival images long kept at my grandparents home in Bordeaux, I tell the story of my childhood in Mandima, a small village in northeastern Zaire where I was born. Starting with a panoramic photo of the big departure, I observe and think back, photo after photo, to those first 10 years of this little boy who must, one fine day, leave for the city, for high school. Behind him, he leaves his friends and a whole culture. Life, its mentality, its rules, will have to be relearned. Comment Film about childhood with false innocence. 1 voice + photos. Cut, framed, reframed, revisited, assembled. Which tell us that getting on a (small) plane is not an easy thing. And that it is sometimes equivalent to a decisive step.
