Lou-Anna Ulloa del Rio – Cinétoile et Life is filled with secrets and treasures everywhere “I think that the goal of installation art should be to create an experience between objects so that viewers are transported outside themselves to recognise a larger, more complex world.” – Julie Becker

Adryan Barrilliet – Will I Exist Within You? Will I Exist Within You? is an immersive exploration of the human duality between the desire for connection and the fear of suffering from it. The existential journey follows a torn individual, exploring how social interactions contribute to shaping their essence. By delving into profound themes such as the search for meaning, loneliness, fear and love, the experience, which is divided into four parts, questions our relationship with others, individuality and self-construction. Will I Exist Within You? is an extension of a reflection that began with my thesis work on the influence of video games on personal development, specifically the para-social bonds that are established between players and their accompanying characters.

Pablo Felley – 606 606 is a travelling and modular art space, built from shipping containers. Every three months, the space changes location and layout. 606 invites local artists to create new universes at the intersection of technology and reality. 606 comes to life at night and showcases its identity through constantly evolving 360-degree projections, which cover and transform the structure of the containers. 606 also exists throughout the city through animated posters that offer a new interpretation of the projected visuals. The communication of 606 is simultaneously developed in 3D, 2D and in rhythm.

Ianka Jean-Marie – HYPER-OBJETS Part art book, part science textbook, this meta-encyclopaedia evokes the risks of global warming. Going beyond the usual paradigms of the Anthropocene era, these phenomena are known as HYPER-OBJECTS. Through the reading of a simplified language, this system of mental maps conceptualises these complex phenomena. In the context of the ecological crisis, the materialisation of this ecological thinking allows us to measure our impact, while reinterpreting the phenomenon of the end of the world in a more tangible way. Through this visual archaeology, we search for traces of our contemporary civilisation, questioning our relationship with the future. In truth, doesn t this object bear witness to the destructive movement of the end of the world?

Romain Oederlin – Archetype Is what we see real or subjective? Interpretation is always the result of individual apprehension. This is why space can be manipulated to exacerbate desired relationships. In connection with the perception of our environment, this work examines the principle of anamorphosis generated by typographic typefaces designed in three dimensions. Fluctuating between letters and abstraction, these visual structures offer different degrees of legibility depending on the point of view adopted.

Ella Paleni – Trait de caractère The place of the graphic designer in the age of technological advances: today s world is in constant technological evolution, which raises questions about the place and role of the graphic designer. In this graduation project, I set out to explore this issue by adopting a resolutely manual and artisanal approach. I created a book from A to Z, using traditional manufacturing techniques, from the elaboration of the paper to the final binding. By moving away from the omnipresent process of digitalisation, I sought to express a need to return to the very essence of the graphic design profession. This project highlights the advantages of an artisanal approach in an increasingly digital world. It encourages reflection on the specific skills that graphic designers can bring to the table.

Eloïse Genoud – INSIDE “INSIDE is a project that focuses on contemporary dance, movement and the human body. It stems from my deep passion for dance and aims to capture the essence of this art form from a personal perspective. Drawing from my 18 years of experience as a dancer, I strive to bring forth the energy, collective spirit and love for the stage that is inherent in this art form. INSIDE alludes to that special moment of stepping into the spotlight, where bodies and light come together in a profound connection. This work is not a documentary on dance, but rather an experimental journey where individuals merge into a common entity. A major part of the project was staged, requiring choreography and active participation in the dances designed exclusively for this production.“

Ulises Lozano – Coming in “Adolescence is synonymous with identity construction. Identity is redefined by today s youth. The aesthetics they adopt reflect a desire for singularity in a changing society. In a collaborative way, I accompany a process of self-affirmation. They blossom and I offer them a space in which to express themselves. Photography takes shape: a safe place for participants to unfold their fantasised personalities – a kind of alter ego in the making. These self-portraits echo the intimate experience of coming in. They become moments of breath, of reconciliation. Through encounters, drawing and photography, they reveal their intimate selves to me. Coming in is a visual interpretation of this process.“

Niklas Herrmann – Kyū Maru Gothic Inspired by hand-painted Japanese station signs from the late 1950s, Kyū Maru Gothic interprets and expands their handmade heritage into a coherent rounded sans serif and multiscript Latin/Japanese typeface. It carefully considers the warm and individual character created by the brush of the original sign painters and integrates it coherently into a typeface that is aimed at contemporary use. Further following the source, the typeface comes on a width axis to allow for more flexible typesetting for its intended use at display sizes.

Moritz Jekat – Wetlands of Pharmacology Exterior virtual organs that enter our bodies and transform our brains surround us. These pharmaca multiply in wetlands between online and real life. In a desire for healing and reconnecting, a group of humanoid aliens inhabit this space and come together in a caring pile of thoughts, emotions and dreams. They share with you, thanks to subconscious writing and wetland tools. A waterbed in space invites you to relax. In the concept of adoption of pharmacology, in contrast to adaptation to the super-fast, consumption-based virtual spheres that are transforming social habits, Wetlands of Pharmacology experiments with a slow coming together and exchange of emotional and physical knowledge of five artists in a computer game engine.

Luca Vernieri – Campà Campà features a series of decorated ceramics developed with I.C.A Giordano, a terracotta factory located in my hometown in the Amalfi Coast area. Originally, the production of ceramics was dedicated to locals who wanted to purchase objects that transformed everyday images into art. These objects depicted animals, fishermen, rural life and landscapes. Over time, as tourism developed, these objects became souvenirs, and decorators focused on reproducing the same patterns for decades with minimal variations. These once representative illustrations now serve as distant reminders, lacking emotional connection with younger generations. Campà aims to restore this bond by introducing self-ironic drawings, illustrating how modern lifestyle has found its unique form in this area.

Juri Bizzotto – Shy Opener, Transfarmer Miniconcert Shy Opener, Transfarmer Miniconcert consists of a live set and presentation of the first single + video clip Shy Opener, made for the Transfarmer Series project. The concert stage is transformed into a window into the world of Transfarmer, where sound, performance and stage elements recreate the bucolic ecosystem of a rediscovered periphery. Transfarmer is a long-term research project, which is committed to creating intersectional critical thinking with respect to the condition of queer, trans* subjectivities in the rural context – imagining metamorphoses of them and their landscape. The practical project includes drawings, texts, sound compositions, videos and props, and aims to produce an EP that will narrate the cosmovision of the character of Transfarmer.

Yoonjae Lee – Umwelten: Four Humans Umwelt (pl. Umwelten) refers to the world as it is experienced by a particular organism. This installation visualises subtle differences in the Umwelt of four human beings. Eight live streaming cameras face one LED through bespoke camera filters that are shaped based on four individuals corneas. Specifically, the four individuals here are Yoonjae Lee herself and people she cares for. She tries to understand the fundamental differences between her dear ones and herself by discovering the morphological differences in each vision. By focusing on the fact that each person s perception is different due to their bodily differences, before their experiences, this work questions the implicit agreement and undisclosed biases in visual arts that assume everyone sees an artwork in the same way.

Nathanaël Baby – Passe-MAS-partout Art and design meet to highlight the research aspect. This fictitious exhibition takes viewers through the work of MAS Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students. The passe-partout is an in-between object that creates space around a work of art. It gives its name to the exhibition and inspires a series of display stands, specific to each sample.

Checkie Ieong – Dynamic Reflections In the realm of high jewellery, where opulence and elegance often reign supreme, the quest for innovation and creativity continues to push the boundaries of design. The convergence of technology and artistry has paved the way for an exciting evolution in the world of jewellery, giving rise to interactive and playful pieces that transcend traditional aesthetics. This high jewellery collection draws inspiration from the mesmerising allure of kinetic movement. The collection is a testament to the harmonious marriage of motion and meticulous craftsmanship. Inspired by the captivating dynamism found in kinetic art, each piece in this collection encapsulates the essence of movement, inviting the wearer to engage, interact and partake in the unfolding narrative of the jewellery.

Ambre Tuttle – A(r)table Eating used to be a basic need, but today aesthetics have never been so important at the table. As cooking evolves into art, let us turn our food into unique creations, ephemeral experiences and vectors of identity. A(r)table is a collection of objects that result from a search focused on visual impact and how we present our dishes. This project assumes that pleasure resides as much in the tasting as in the confection. The plate becomes an empty canvas for drawing, tracing and composing, calling for creativity. Paying attention to the appearance of our dishes may seem pointless, but it is the very origin of our desire to eat. The pleasure of tasting starts with our imagination, and sublimating our plates is also sublimating a moment.

Fantastic Smartphones at Ars Electronica 2023,06–10.09.2023 Ars Electronica is hosting the Fantastic Smartphones exhibition from 6 to 10 September 2023 in Austria. Ars Electronica is considered to be Europe s biggest and oldest event devoted to art, technology and society. For its 2023 edition, the festival is inviting artists, scientists, developers, designers and entrepreneurs to consider the following question: Who owns the truth? A theme that touches on the main controversial issues of our time: truth and ownership, interpretative authority and sovereignty. Can truth be owned? Is there a right to truth and, if it belongs to someone, what control and responsibility are associated with it? Fantastic Smartphones takes part in the festival with a serie of interactive installations developed by the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students of ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, investigating in a critical and offbeat way our relationship with our smartphones and the way they influence our daily behaviour. Giulia Goy – Rose on the farm (Direction) Rose is a young filmmaker who s looking for a job. She decides to go on a course to retrain as a farmer. This is an inceptive story that questions our relationship with the land, with art, as well as the role of filmmakers as observers of our world. Docu-Fiction / 35 min Synopsis Rose, a young, recently graduated filmmaker, reflects on her calling on this earth. Looking for a job, she applies to the regional employment office. As there are no openings and as she wishes to work outside, she gets an offer to retrain as a farmer. Rose decides to trust the institution and embarks on this existential venture while keeping a diary. An initiatory quest that questions our relationship to nature, to art, to the role of filmmaker as an observer of our world. Student s comment Attracted by different image regimes, it was obvious to me that I wanted to use them for my graduation film. I knew that I wanted to film cows, but then I wasn t yet aware of my attraction to them. I prefer documentaries because of the freedom they give me to work in this way, and the chance they give me to play with fiction in a "pretend" way. I d already experimented with this form with my previous short film, Casting di un Padre, and made me want to go deeper into this personal approach. I really wanted to experiment with my practice, get out of my comfort zone and want to move towards a cinema that speaks to me. Giulia Goy

Ilan Dubi – Before ocean (Direction) Léon has a tough night as he runs away from home to join Olivia on her journey to the ocean. Fiction / 21 min Synopsis For one night, Léon, a 15-year-old boy, runs away from home. He s going to join Olivia, a young adult who s going to the ocean to settle down. But the two bikers who are supposed to take them have had one of their motorcycles stolen. So Léon and Olivia wander the city, each with their desires and dreams in danger. Student s comment A short film shot in Lausanne by night. With a shoulder-mounted camera and a small crew, we set out into the streets of Lausanne to film an adolescent wandering tinged with the melancholy of a departure. I wanted to explore the notion of introspection and the feeling of disillusionment that inhabits our teenage years in this film with its saturated images and surreal sounds. The ocean haunts the characters. Ilan Dubi

1st year Documentary Workshop 1st year students took part in a documentary workshop led by Benoit Rossel, on the theme of the interview. Professor: Guest teacher (editing): For this first-year documentary workshop, I proposed making a film centered on a character with a particular link to a place. To this end, and before even confronting the real thing, the students were asked to write a purely imaginary synopsis of what their film would be. The aim of this stage was not only to explore the story they were working on, but also to narrow down their field of research. At the end of this first stage, a course was set for achieving their various goals. The search for a protagonist was the second stage, forcing them to confront and adapt to reality. But, as with filming and editing, their choices were guided by this useful and valuable preliminary work. So, in the end, all the films resonate strongly with the imagination of each and every one of them, and beyond the documentary project, they are a portrait of the filmmakers themselves, reflecting something very sensitive about the personalities of each of them. Realtime Narratives During the Realtime Narratives course, second-year students had to create a real-time narrative experience using Unreal Engine software. Based on the theme of "Chrysalis", the students developed the scenario, the graphic assets and the interactions. The aim of the project was to raise students awareness of the use of 3D realtime engines and the various links with other software specific to each stage of development. LA POSTE × ECAL For the Swiss Post Office, students from ECAL s Bachelor Graphic Design and Bachelor Media & Interaction Design are creating a postage stamp based on artificial intelligence. Thanks to augmented reality, Metascape transports Swiss Post users into an imaginary and poetic universe on the way to a destination that remains elusive. Strange, but not really foreign: that s the unsettling impression given by the design of this special stamp called "Metascape". Using augmented reality technology, this creation, made up of elements that are both familiar and surreal, immerses us in a fantastic world shaped by artificial intelligence. An Instagram filter lets you access the virtual journey simply by scanning the QR code on this exclusive postage stamp. With "Destination" as its theme, this collaboration between ECAL students and Swiss Post initially gave rise to fourteen concepts created through group work. After a pre-selection of five works by a jury made up of members of ECAL, Swiss Post and the Stamp Commission, the "Metascape" project was chosen to move from imagination to reality. Discover below the other pre-selected projects. What s next ?A destination is basically a journey from point A to point B. But what happens during this elapsed time? The idea is to illustrate an epic with a board that would be a pawn s playground. We follow this character as he discovers an unsuspected universe through each environment he crosses, with the aim of satisfying his thirst for discovery of the world. Through the accumulation of collected memories, the character blossoms, constantly searching for his next destination. The filter allows you to move around a deconstructed game board. From one square to the next, we discover a different world in which fictional elements interact and transform. Magazine - 22-23 As part of the magazine course led by Anouk Schneider and Chi-Long Trieu, 2nd-year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design a magazine during the second semester. Students were encouraged to explore their artistic freedom at all stages of creation, whether it be in terms of format, paper choice, binding, layout, illustrations, text, or typography. In this course, the magazine can take shape through various forms of illustrations, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, etc. The focus is on the artist s vision and the methods used to bring it to life. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator, and architect, covering responsibilities such as art director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and editorial assistant. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a well-structured content sequence. Tant qu il n y a pas de frottement, le mouvement sera continu,01.06–24.09.2023,Espace Mercerie, Lausanne An exhibition presented by second-year Bachelor of Visual Arts students at the ECAL, as part of the "faits et gestes" course taught by Philippe Decrauzat, in collaboration with VU.CH, art in hospital. "Rue Mercerie" has always been a hotbed of artistic activity. Between 1970 and 1996, the Rivolta gallery exhibited a large number of modern and contemporary artists. In this cobbled street, which has been linked to Lausanne s art history for many years, a common reflection was born: how can an exhibition space be shaped and questioned? A connection is made between the outside and the inside of the art space. The main feature of the street, its severe slope, is transposed into the space in the form of an oblique platform. Various works are presented on this platform, blending the collective with the individual. By modifying the floor, the behaviour usually adopted in an exhibition space is disturbed. The traditional point of view is disrupted, allowing a different approach to the space and the works. Audiences are invited to descend into this space and experience what this layout can offer. The impact not only of the space but also of the history of the place on the experience of an art installation is reminiscent of a principle that underpins the VU.CH programme at the CHUV - Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois. Art in the hospital context is much the same as in a museum or gallery, but it is experienced differently, not least because of the configuration of the spaces.DATES AND SCHEDULEFrom 1 June to 24 September 2023 Open every Saturday, 11am-2pm Free entryADDRESSEspace Mercerie Rue Mercerie 22 1003 LausanneWEBSITEvu.chuv.chOPENINGThursday 1st June, 6pmSTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , Seline Symons, dans le cadre du cours faits et gestes donné par .

PROJECTION ECAL - LEVIATHAN,25.05.2023, 18:00,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL Filmed on a fishing boat off the coast of Boston, Leviathan pushes the boundaries of what can be filmed. The projection of this documentary that warns of the threats of intensive fishing as much as it reveals the stunning beauty of the ocean s entrails, will be followed by a meeting with its co-director, Verena Paravel. Born on April 21, 1971 in Neuchâtel (CH), Verena Paravel is a French director, artist and anthropologist. She works at the Sensory Ethnography Lab, a research center at Harvard University. Her work is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has been screened in numerous festivals such as Berlin, Locarno, New York and Toronto. She has notably directed with Lucien Castaing-Taylor, in 2012 Leviathan, an experimental film about industrial fishing in North America, in 2017 Caniba, about and with Issei Sagawa, a Japanese man accused of killing and eating a Dutch student in Paris in 1981, and in 2022 De Humani Corporis Fabrica, a journey to the heart of the body mixing their images with those recorded by doctors. Verena Paravel is a lecturer in the ECAL/HEAD Master of Film Studies. Leviathan Documentary Directed by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel Written by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, Verena Paravel United States, United Kingdom, France - 2012 - 87 minutes Filmed on an industrial fishing boat, using a dozen small digital cameras, Leviathan is a documentary of incredible formal innovation and a harrowing plunge into the ship s labyrinthine bowels. Almost entirely without dialogue, the film exposes the brutality and bloodiness of the human-nature-machine encounter. Between anthropological observation and abstract cinematic experience, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel have created a monstrous and sublime audio-visual opus, whose carnage and shadowy setting add up to nothing less than a seaborne nightmare.

Frontiere di Sabbia - DRONE WORKSHOP "Frontiere di Sabbia" is an exhibition of the students of the Master of Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, in collaboration with the Biennale dell Immagine di Chiasso. The collection of projects you will see has been created with drones: aircraft originally developed for warfare that have been transformed into civilian and popular forms. In just a few years, these devices have undergone a dizzying technological evolution and achieved considerable commercial success. Used for a variety of purposes - recreational and professional, political and subversive - these “unmanned aerial vehi- cles” can be easily purchased and controlled remotely, like in a video game. The opportunities offered by civilian drones combine with multiple negative con- sequences: the confusion between reality and simu- lation, privacy violations, and the use for illegal and violent actions. From a photographic perspective, drones offer infinite viewpoints for exceptional, vertical, and total vision. Equipped with all-round sensors, they fly autonomou- sly on programmed routes and are able to monitor the territory and its inhabitants. The “Frontiere di Sabbia” exhibition, presented in the Ex Saceba building, a ce- ment factory located a few kilometers from the bor- der, recalls the past of these places where materials were produced to build houses, bridges, and highways, but also walls and barriers. By diverting from prede- termined and automated paths, a new generation of image creators questions us about our perception of our limits: human, political, and technological.

Festival HYPER OUEST: Alva Noto s concert,04.05.2023,Auditoire IKEA, ECAL From April 27 to May 7, ECAL will participate in Hyper Ouest festival, which will take place in the municipalities of western Lausanne, and will open its doors for the concert of the German artist Alva Noto. Hyper Ouest festival offers the opportunity to (re)discover the municipalities of western Lausanne through concerts, shows, exhibitions, workshops, walks, and unusual events. On this occasion, ECAL will host Alva Noto s concert. As the founder of "reductionism," his scientific approach to music has made him a reference in the field. The native of Karl-Marx Stadt in Germany founded his label Noton in 1999, which operated for over 20 years in service of minimalism. At the same time, he has collaborated extensively. He covered The Cure, worked with Iggy Pop, and co-signed, with his partner Ryuichi Sakamoto, the soundtrack of Alejandro González Iñárritu s The Revenant. Alva Noto is a builder who works in the interstices between art, science, and sound. His diverse body of work is a journey to the land of minimalist and melancholic ambient music. Unpacking Tschichold s Library,27.04–26.05.2023,Gallery l elac, ECAL From April 27 to May 26, ECAL presents Unpacking Tschichold s Library at gallery l elac. An exhibition in the form of a library presenting the books mentinoned in Jan Tschichold s seminal publication The New Typography (1928). Opening on Wednesday, April 26. Jan Tschichold s “The New Typography” is a critical essay and an operative handbook that paved the way to modern graphic design. It is a game-changing book that still attracts the interest and curiosity of design historians and practitioners after almost a century since its publication in 1928. Yet, it is simultaneously a victim of its own success, and it has to deal with the consequences associated with canonisation. Having reached an almost mythical status, the publication is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinized. This paradox was the starting point of the research project “The Sources of Jan Tschichold s ‘The New Typography ”. Conducted at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and supported by the Strategic fund of HES-SO, the project reconstructed, collected and contextualized the body of bibliographical sources included in “The New Typography”. On the occasion of the opening on Wednesday, April 26, the conference "Jan Tschichold s "The New Typography": Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes" will be held at ECAL from 9:15 to 18:00. Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes,26.04.2023,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, ECAL welcomes scholars from the fields of art and design history and print culture for an international conference aiming to provide a better understanding of the cultural context of Jan Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that emerged from it. Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. Yet, The New Typography is simultaneously a victim of its own success and it has to deal with the consequences associated with canonisation. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinized. This paradox was the starting point of the research project “The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography”. Conducted at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO) and supported by the Strategic fund of HES-SO, the project reconstructed, collected and contextualized the body of bibliographical sources included in The New Typography. This international conference invites scholars in the field of art and design history and print culture to present their research. The conference aims to provide a better understanding of the larger cultural context of Tschichold s book and the typographic movement that stemmed from it. The results of the project will be presented at the conference along with keynote lectures by Dr Paul Stirton, Professor emeritus at Bard Graduate Center, New York, Dr Christopher Burke, Principal Research Fellow at University of Reading, and Dr Julia Meer, Curator of the poster and graphics collection, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. ECAL AT VISIONS DU REEL: Masterclass and films,21–30.04.2023,Théâtre de Marens, Nyon As part of the film festival Visions du Réel (April 21 to 30) in Nyon, Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass on Tuesday, April 25, organized in partnership with La Cinémathèque suisse. Four films from ECAL Cinema Department students and alumni will also be part of the programmation. MASTERCLASS: LUCRECIA MARTEL Filmmaker and screenwriter Salta, Argentina Tuesday, April 25, 2pm Usine à Gaz 2, Nyon Visions du Réel s guest of honour Lucrecia Martel will give a masterclass, which will explore her body of work and her relationship with reality. A retrospective of her films will also be presented during the edition. Lucrecia Martel gained international fame with her first feature length film La ciénaga (2001), shot in her home region, and has since embodied the resurgence of Argentinian film, both nationally and internationally. The director s filmography, which consists of 4 feature length films and 25 titles in total (including different kinds of projects), has constantly made a mark on her country in a post-dictatorial context, as well as at the most prestigious festivals. Lucrecia Martel s films use a highly sensual cinematographical grammar to examine the existential crisis of the Argentinian middle classes, the inner workings of society and the country s suffocating social mechanism, as well as post-colonial issues. She achieves all this while relentlessly evoking, implicitly, the history of her country and the ghosts that inhabit it. Her attention to detail – particularly to sound, noise and dialogues – and the kaleidoscopic approach of her work are in keeping with a dual tradition that is both oral and adventurous in cinematographical terms, steeped in a joyous cinephilia. Rooted in the filmmaker s very familiar territories and experiences, Lucrecia Martel s body of work borrows from a multitude of genres and offers a rich and fascinating hybridisation of fiction and reality. After Terminal Norte in 2021, she is currently working on new non-fiction feature length film that should be released in 2023. Moderated by Emilie Bujès, artistic director of Visions du Réel and Paolo Moretti, head of ECAL Cinema Department. Lecture ECAL - Alain Guiraudie,18.04.2023,Auditorium Leenaards, ECAL Invited by ECAL Cinema and Fine Arts departments, the French director and artist Alain Guiraudie will give a lecture on Tuesday April 18, 2023 at 6pm. Born in 1964, Alain Guiraudie grew up in Bournazel, a village in Aveyron where his parents were farmers. After high school, he studied History in Montpellier, but stopped to work and write novels that were not published. Having above all the desire to make films, he directed a first short film, Les héros sont immortels, in 1990, followed by a second and a third. This led him to make longer films, including Du soleil pour les gueux in 2000 and Ce vieux rêve qui bouge in 2001. He has since directed 6 feature films including L Inconnu du lac and Rester vertical. The latest one, Viens je t emmène, was released in March 2022. He has also published two novels with P.O.L.: Ici commence la nuit in 2014 and Rabalaïre in 2021. He will exhibit for the first time at Panorama 2019, then at the Crèvecœur Gallery in Paris, at the Consortium Museum in Dijon and at the Daniel Buccholz Gallery in Berlin in 2023. Moderated by Paolo Moretti, head of the Cinema department and Stéphanie Moisdon, head of Master of Fine Arts.

ECAL MILANO 2023: Junkyard Diving,17–23.04.2023,House of Switzerland, Milano On the occasion of the Milan Design Week (17-23 April 2023), ECAL presents Junkyard Diving at the House of Switzerland. Under the guidance of the designer Philippe Malouin, ECAL s Bachelor students in Industrial Design invite us to question our consumption habits, the role of designers and the world of tomorrow. The shortage of energy and resources that many countries are currently experiencing or anticipating, raises several questions about supply alternatives and ways of limiting consumption. According to studies, the cumulative number of metals to be produced in the coming years would exceed the cumulative amount produced since antiquity to the present day. In the wake of forthcoming legislation on the right to repair products, energy and resource consumption, design, as an innovation discipline, must play a key role. Junkyard Diving questions our consumption habits, as well as the role of designers in the world of tomorrow. "Form follows function" is a maxim attributed to the modernist architect Louis Sullivan. In industrial design, if this statement is sometimes at the heart of reflections, it can also be reversed, in which case the form determines the function through a creative process based on existing elements. During a week-long workshop with designer Philippe Malouin, Bachelor Industrial Design students adopted this latter approach: seeking new functions inspired by forms found in a metal recycling center. Through this process, unexpected associations and discoveries are made, generating a new vocabulary of forms. « With resources dwindling, it is essential to challenge the way we generate new ideas: combining or altering existing forms and elements can lead to new discoveries in product design. Other people s trash can definitely be our creative treasure », says Philippe Malouin. Junkyard Diving highlights the existing - yet under-exploited - opportunities for recycling that design provides. Presented at the House of Switzerland, Junkyard Diving is part of the group exhibition Urgent Legacy, which proposes innovative and sustainable Swiss design responses to the urgent challenges of the present, in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and Presence Switzerland.

ECAL Lecture - Brian Roettinger,05.04.2023,Cinema Studio, ECAL Present during the spring semester as part of his ECAL residency at La Becque, designer Brian Roettinger will discuss his practice and his many projects of international scope through an audiovisual and immersive approach on Wednesday, April 5 at 6pm. As a partners at Perron–Roettinger, designer Brian Roettinger has worked on creative projects with some of the world s biggest brands and musicians. Roettinger s work is an uncanny union of punk ideology with a conceptually driven mode of modernist design. He frequently employs architectural strategies such as repetition and structure, while subverting this sense of order by manipulating the production process in unexpected or “wrong” ways (think pulling the sheet out of the printer before it is done). He continues to work with a wide variety of artists and brands (Jay-Z, Florence + The Machine, Mark Ronson, SKKN by Kim, Cartier, ...) taking an holistic approach to the design process from idea to completion. His work is diverse spanning album packaging, publications, branding, campaigns, and product design. He has been nominated for numerous awards included three Art Direction Grammy s for album packaging.

Among his iconic pieces are a series of 13 limited edition vases in ceramic for Atelier Rossicone, in polished pewter for Numa and in red marble for GVM La Civiltà del Marmo, and more recently the GEO vase for Lalique, as well as projects for the Riva 1920 factory, known for its furniture in natural wood.
