Service Design - 2024 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda.Your Email s Carbon Footprint Poster & Website This project comprises a website that explores various aspects of the carbon footprint of emails and the different ways in which they contribute to CO2 emissions. To make this information more accessible, the carbon footprint figures of emails are illustrated using concrete and familiar examples for the general public, such as kilometers driven by cars or the energy consumption of household appliances. In order to raise awareness among a broad audience, we have introduced a mascot named Bob, who serves as a guide through this information. Posters summarize the three main elements of the site: the CO2 emissions from emails, solutions to reduce this footprint, and an introduction to Bob. They encourage the public to visit the website to learn more. By , & SHIEn Website & Moving Poster Our project aims to raise awareness among 18-24 year olds about the social and environmental issues of ultra fast fashion, focusing specifically on the case of the giant SHEIN. The idea is to dissect each step of the ordering process by revealing behind-the-scenes aspects through an interactive experience that incorporates social media codes. By , & back to Newspaper & Video We have created a project aimed at promoting sustainable cosmetics. This project highlights the adoption of solid cosmetics in a zero waste approach. It raises awareness and informs about an effective and simple alternative, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sustainable solutions that are respectful of both people and the environment. By , & Anthracite Edition & video Our project aims to raise awareness among the public about the dangers of light pollution for the survival of nocturnal insects and its impact on Swiss biodiversity. The edition combines scientific popularization with photographs illustrating the impact of light, blending the poetic with the alarming. The teaser immerses the viewer in a first-person perspective, experiencing life as an insect, to demonstrate the direct effects of this invasive light and to evoke empathy among the audience. Award-winning project at the USM Design Grant competition By , & 2030CHF Magazines & instagram We have launched a magazine called 2030CHF, with an annual publication every year until 2030. This magazine examines Switzerland from a new and impartial perspective, inviting everyone to ask themselves: "Will we achieve our goals by 2030?" By , & Tue la·e consomateur·ice en toi ! Fanzine & Website We have created a fanzine and a website to inform about the capitalist logic of over-responsibilizing individuals. This project aims to provide keys to understanding the consumer condition and to encourage breaking this status by becoming agents of change, disseminating content, and taking action. By , & ECOVILLE Video game & Website The project ECOVILLE takes the form of a downloadable computer video game. Interactive and fun, it is designed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving urban flora and fauna. The main objective is to provide children with simple ecological solutions that they can easily implement. By sharing their newfound knowledge with their parents, children become ambassadors for environmental conservation. The game also helps to develop their autonomy and critical thinking through its various stages and challenges. By , & bits & peels Book & instagram The project consists of an educational edition in the form of a cookbook, inspired by grandmother s recipes, highlighting various foods, their types, and different ways to transform their waste. These transformation methods are categorized into several categories: cosmetics, maintenance, cooking, and gardening. The edition is accompanied by Instagram posts focused on seasonal fruits and vegetables, offering tips for effectively recycling these foods. By , &

LET THE DATASET CHANGE YOUR MINDSET This project revolves around a fully functional data visualization experience and graphical interface, designed and programmed by second-year Bachelor students in Media & Interaction Design as part of a course taught by Gaël Hugo. This exercise begins with the following reflection: "Fun" datasets concern topics that are of personal interest, and can be used to answer unexpected questions and explore relationships that aren t immediately intuitive. Perhaps you start with a question or hypothesis, and then find a dataset to prove (or disprove) your theory. Or, you might even generate your own dataset using web scraping techniques or an open API. In fact, creating your own dataset enables you to collect, label, and prepare a clean dataset. - Kindra Coope l évolution des sorcières au cinéma Par Olivia CapolWho bears the responsibility for the future of space? Le livre d artiste - 23/24 As part of the publishing course led by Anouk Schneider and Chi-Long Trieu, 2nd year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach aimed at creating an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content in the current context of the editorial landscape. Students were encouraged to exploit their artistic freedom at all levels of creation, whether in terms of format, choice of paper, binding, layout, illustrations, text or typography. As part of this course, the artist s book can take shape through various illustration modalities, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, etc. The emphasis is on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to realize it. TRANSLATION During the visual identity course, the 2nd year Graphic Design bachelors had to produce a communication project based on a translation. They had to define their own translation system and develop a visual language based on these rules. SOURCE BOOKThrough a selection of ten books that talk about books, the study looks at the representation of the publishing object. From its materiality, volume and image to its translation into the same medium. The questioning extends firstly to the relationship between dematerialised design on the screen and printed materiality, as well as the volume that the editorial object represents. Secondly, through a process of digitisation and photocopying, the project explores the aesthetic potential of the photocopying medium. The graphic design, influenced by the characteristics of this medium, is presented as a form of reading, transforming a collection of content into a superimposition of images. The integration of this content into two juxtaposed posters aims to reinterpret the book in the poster under a third layer. The book is then defined in a new way in the context in which it is displayed. Par Historia ItinerisHistoria Itineris translates physical museum space into virtual space, reinterpreting the "bugs" created by Google Street View and the codes of curation to delve into the thoughts of an exhibition by a fictional artist, Joseph Knecht. Par Collective Memory From social media profiles to forum posts, from digital transactions to website visits, our online presence leaves traces that all too often go unnoticed. What would happen if we could retrieve this data and translate it into an avatar? By diving into the depths of my digital history, I ve gathered together all the information I could find about myself online. Par RADIO49DRADIO49D is a free local radio station based in the town of Renens (Canton of Vaud, Switzerland), originally created for this visual identity project. It was launched in October 2023 at number 49D on the Rue de Lausanne. It broadcasts a wide variety of content freely (often illegally) over the available FM airwaves. Its callsign is HB4DI, but this is nothing more than a usurpation, as the radio s founder never declared its existence to the relevant authorities. RADIO49D transmits over a maximum radius of 100 metres using a Raspberry Pi 4 computer and a ten-centimetre wire. RADIO49D s programming is free and unpredictable, so it generates maps for communicative purposes that it broadcasts by radio to regular listeners using the SSTV (Slow-scan Television) technique. These cards are then translated into radio waves, then retranscribed into images after reception and re-translation. An album acting as a physical archive of RADIO49D has been produced as part of its visual identity. It provides a complete record of the cards sent and received between October 2023 and January 2024. Par Eiger Air Eiger Air is an upcoming event taking place on the slopes of Mount Eiger. You ll be able to see an air show put on by the Patrouille Suisse. The identity of the event focuses on the representation of the visual language of aviation, as well as the translation of the signals made by a "yellow dog" to communicate with the aircraft from the landing strip. Par Weather Report "Weather Report" explores the popular visual codes of weather presentation. Drawing on viewers familiarity with the patterns, motifs, typographic elements, gestures and staging of presenters, the project offers a graphic reinterpretation in a variety of media. These elements are then transposed onto various printed media such as posters and a calendar, but also in an animation designed to deconstruct and then reassemble these visual components. Par

Vietnamese objects: The material culture of resilience in the face of (de)colonisation Cà phê (coffee), atisô (artichoke), xi nê ma (cinema), căng tin (canteen) or xi-măng (cement): in the Vietnamese language, many words bear the imprint of a French origin. And what if the same were true of everyday objects? Somewhere between cultural anthropology, the epistemology of Vietnamese design and the sociology of objects, this research project analyses the production of objects in Vietnam in the light of French colonisation and decolonisation. Through reportage, interviews and research carried out in various archive collections, this book sets out to reveal the mechanisms by which objects, foods, materials and know-how have been integrated into Vietnam until today they can boast authentically Vietnamese characteristics. Like an archive of the present day, through the prism of design and the applied arts, the authors take a decolonial and critical look at the creativity and adaptability of a country that has succeeded in appropriating the techniques of a dominant power.Main applicantQuang Vinh Nguyen Émilie LaystaryResearch teamQuang Vinh Nguyen Émilie Laystary Cynthia Mai Amman Chi-Long TrieuPeriodJuly 2022 – April 2024Supported byECAL/University of art and design Lausanne Réserve stratégique de la HES-SO (RCDAV)ContributionsEric Panthou Kai Nguyễn Lưu Chữ (Quoc Huy Le, Đức Cao) Mắt Bét Nhat Thanh Le Tien Dat Vu Thai Ha Vu Trong Đặt Nguyễn Quoc Huy Le Vincent Yuen Ruiz Xuân-Hạ Vu

Graduated with an ECAL Master Fine Arts in 2018, Lorenza Longhi currently lives and works in Zurich. Recent solo shows include Kunsthalle Zürich; Ordet, Milan; Weiss Falk, Basel; Fanta-MLN, Milan; and Plymouth Rock, Zürich. Her works have been included in group exhibitions at Kolnischer Kunstverein; Halle Fur Kunst Steiermark, Graz; Bonner Kunstverein; Macro, Rome; Fondazione Prada, Venice; Kunsthalle Zürich; Quadriennale di Roma; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin. In Milan, she was a co-founder of Armada (2014-2018). In 2020 she received the Shizuko Yoshikawa Advanced Award for Young Women Artists and the Swiss Emerging Artist Prize 2020 by Societe Generale. In 2021, she was Artist in Residence at Swiss Institute. In 2022, she was among the winners of the International Sculpture Prize by Fondazione Henraux. She is guest professor at ZhDK. Swiss Institute in New York presents World of Yum Yum, her first solo exhibition in the US. Through architectural interventions and a visual language that enlists both strategies of luxury advertising, merchandising and commerce, along with craft and DIY techniques, Lorenza Longhi s work considers spaces of display and the desires they engender. Taking its inspiration from a temporary exhibition space that the artist encountered in an airport, World of Yum Yum features a series of hyperreal closeups of artificial hand-made flowers, reminiscent of Chanel brooches, with a spy camera in the center. The artist used the spy camera s microphone to record atmospheric sounds of music as she strolled through department stores in Zürich and New York. A sound mix that, by the way, gives the impression of shopping... ECAL LECTURE – El Pampero Cine,24.01.2024,Leenaards Auditorium, ECAL More than just a production company, El Pampero Cine was born in 2002 from the desire of a group of people to experiment and renew the procedures and practices of Argentine cinema. In conference at the ECAL, Wednesday 13 October 2024 at 6.00pm. Part of the formidable revival known as the "New Argentine Cinema", the collective produced films of international renown, such as La Flor (2018), Castro (2009) and Trenque Lauquen (2022), always with a radical economic approach. El Pampero Cine s influence is not confined to aesthetics: its revolution affects above all forms of production and exhibition. Since Balnearios, in 2002, El Pampero Cine has developed a production system based on radical independence from conventional funding sources, which has enabled them to produce consistently fertile output. Historias Extraordinarias confirms that El Pampero Cine has imposed a new way of producing in Argentina, working with budgets that are significantly lower than the smallest industrial productions, without this inferiority of conditions having anything to do with the technical or aesthetic quality of the works. El Pampero Cine is made up of Mariano Llinás, Laura Citarella, Agustín Mendilaharzu and Alejo Moguilansky, Argentine directors, editors, writers and producers. Realtime Narratives 2024 During the Realtime Narratives course, second-year students had to create a real-time narrative experience using Unreal Engine software. The aim of the project was to raise students awareness of the use of 3D realtime engines and the various links with other software specific to each stage of development. Firefly This project explores an alternate reality where human dominance and omnipresence over the natural world have given way to a new balance—a harmonious coexistence between technology and nature. As the player journeys through this mysterious landscape, they absorb the atmosphere and search for answers. Where have the humans gone? Where do all these fireflies come from? This journey invites reflection on the increasingly blurred boundary between nature and technology. Does this distinction still make sense in a world where humans have delegated so many of their abilities, tasks, and even dreams to machines? Through the lens of this world, the project questions our tendency to offload responsibilities onto technology—both as a tool for emancipation and as a potential trap leading to our own obsolescence. By portraying a world where humanity seems to have reached the peak of its aspirations for technological delegation, it urges us to consider whether the path we are currently on will lead to our fulfillment or if we are heading toward a reality where our very essence might be called into question. Par Updated This interactive experience questions our relationship with technological obsolescence. Through the lens of emerging technologies and their relentless evolution, we constantly seek ways to maximize hardware and software capabilities, driving our devices to undergo an increasing number of updates. With each update, individuals face the necessity of these upgrades, the reality of planned obsolescence, and the fear of becoming technologically outdated. However, this process doesn t always go smoothly and can, ironically, also lead to the device s obsolescence. This project explores the stress and pressure experienced by those compelled to perform these updates, highlighting the tension between the desire to stay at the cutting edge of technology and the fear of being left behind. Par Dimmuborgir Dimmuborgir explores the convergence of various elements that collectively shape a legend. Set in a Nordic-inspired environment to evoke an eternal and mysterious atmosphere, the game presents three puzzles, each inspired by traditional video game mechanics, offering a distinct form of reflection. Solving these puzzles sequentially leads the player to create the myth. The first puzzle symbolizes deep contemplation, driven both by clarity of mind and the altered perspectives induced by psychoactive substances, opening the door to radically different thinking. The second puzzle delves into logic and investigation, requiring precise organization of discovered information into the correct locations and sequence. This fosters a more structured and logical thought process. The final puzzle concludes the quest by using the metaphor of the cave, representing the focused trajectory of thought once set in motion. It signifies the completion of the search, where every discovered element is restored to its rightful place, breathing life into the legend. Par Unlocked "Unlocked" is a video game-inspired experience that critiques societal norms within the education system. The main character is a girl who hasn t yet found her place in the world. She has pink skin and horns, symbolizing her alienation from her environment, and constantly wears a melancholic expression. As players explore the game, they encounter the gendered characteristics of schools, represented by color-coded lockers and a classroom scene symbolizing public scrutiny. The library highlights the pervasive culture of bullying, forcing players to confront societal pressures. The narrative deepens in a garden adorned with grotesque sculptures embodying beauty ideals. Players must destroy these symbols, exposing the school s attempts to conceal the influence such standards have on students. This game serves as a commentary on societal expectations, gender norms, and the subtle coercion present within educational institutions. Par

So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Noli Oblivisci Book In this edition, I analyse the influence of time on the architecture of the Family House, which has been abandoned for many years. Exploring the intergenerational dimension at the heart of this temporal investigation, I have structured each aspect in terms of degrees, generational degrees. As the great-granddaughter of the house s last residents, I represent degree 2, while my father embodies degree 1. So, as we explored the house, we described it by sharing anecdotes and affinities specific to our respective degrees. The investigation thus evolved into a family dimension, going beyond its purely temporal nature. By Ruelle Thomas 21 Book Ruelle Thomas 21 is where my mum s bookshop used to be, on the ground floor of our family home, and which went bankrupt in 2015. Each room was dedicated to a particular audience: cookery books in the kitchen, children s books in the bedroom, and novels in the living room, for adults. The best way for me to express this was to use this separation of the flat to delimit the literary space of each person. I took my point of view as a child who didn t like to read, to experiment with and deconstruct the sequence imposed by literature, using my mum s literary criticism, book covers and a manifesto to make people feel less guilty. By Abri Anti Atomique Book Swiss atomic shelters are an architectural phenomenon that contrasts with the country s neutrality. This is why, when Switzerland publishes documents relating to war and the defence of its citizens, the tone used is very modest, even naïve, given the seriousness of the subjects covered. In the same way, the publication contrasts the seriousness of the subject of shelters with the spectacular beauty of the disasters that justify the use of shelters. By I never felt at home Video "I never felt at home" is about the feeling, the discomfort and the melancholy of never feeling at home, no matter where you live. The discomfort felt outside is brought into the intimacy of the home through projection. By ce qu il reste de la vérité Book Childhood, an ephemeral and singular stage, forms the basis of our identity. "Ce qu il reste de la vérité" is a narrative and personal exploration of childhood in care. The key idea is to present this nuanced experience, oscillating between fleeting happiness and complex issues, through a dual narrative: that of the child who, without really understanding the circumstances, undergoes them with innocence and dissociation; and that of the adult, whose more mature view offers a retrospective reflection on this singular period of life. By Manifeste Photométrique Book This research project involves a technical analysis of lighting interactions within a residential space, with particular emphasis on the mental health criteria engendered by lighting and the visual preferences of potential occupants. The aim of this analysis is to deconstruct the mechanisms and variables influencing interior lighting, architecture and the environment in order to create a synthesis between functionality and aesthetics. The Cultural Turn in Swiss Graphic Design from the 1980s to 2020 The research project investigates the discourse on graphic design in Switzerland in the under-researched period from 1980 to 2020. While the 1950s and 1960s saw graphic design in Switzerland reach international recognition and commercial expansion under the label “Swiss style”, a paradigm shift emerged in the following decades. The attention of many practitioners turned away from design as a pure service for the industrial and service sector and moved towards cultural commissions on a local, national and international level. Instead of aiming for maximum return, they chose their commissions according to whether they promised them creative freedom and whether they contributed to the profiling of their portfolio in alignment with their new definition of the profession as a lifestyle. This project examines the emergence and the development of this phenomenon, which became known as “cultural graphic design”, in professional graphic design in Switzerland. Main applicantProf. Dr Davide Fornari (ECAL/HES-SO) Prof. Robert Lzicar (Hochschule der Künste Bern HKB)Research teamDr Chiara Barbieri Dr Jonas Berthod Miriam KobanPeriod01.03.2023 – 28.02.2027Supported bySNSF Swiss National Science FoundationDisseminationWebsite cultural-turn-in-design.ch Conference For the Sake of Creative Freedom: Graphic Design for the Cultural Sector, 1 December 2023, HKB/Hochschule der Künste BernThe project identifies three stages in this cultural turn: the emergence of new values, followed by the development of a discourse on cultural design, and later its institutionalisation in federal policy. Accordingly, it is divided into three case studies bookended with symbolic socio-cultural, political and institutional turning points. The first case study starts with the 1980 riots, which took place in several Swiss cities. These socio-cultural upheavals were accompanied by an explosive increase in alternative cultural venues and outlets, which provided new working environments and fields of activity for visual designers. This case study focuses on the emergence of new professional values, summarised as “cultural graphic design”, and ends with the institutionalisation of alternative cultural centres at the end of the decade. The second case study explores the articulation and mediation of the discourse surrounding this practice. From the 1990s, designers created objects, organised exhibitions, wrote books and published articles promoting and negotiating their new position. This output contributed to the establishment of a discourse on “cultural graphic design” in Switzerland. The case study begins in 1993 with the publication of a polemic article that criticised the state of commercial Swiss graphic design while praising the arrival of a new generation of designer-authors active in culture. It ends in 2000 with the publication of two books that not only cemented the phenomenon of “cultural graphic design” in Switzerland but also made it known beyond its borders by promoting these new practices. Finally, the third case study analyses how “cultural design” transitioned from vanguard to mainstream. This period saw the canonisation of “cultural design”, which was adopted by an increasing number of graphic designers. It also witnessed a political institutionalisation, as evidenced in the reforms of federal design prizes such as the Most Beautiful Swiss Books in 1997 and the Swiss Design Awards in 2002. The case study ends with the period covered by the Kulturbotschaft 2016–2020, which defined the federal strategy for cultural policy and, for the first time, inscribed the support of design within the remit of action of the State. Drawing on recent findings, this project traces the development of design in Switzerland with a focus on transregional relations. The case studies share a common methodology of triangulating network analysis, oral history and the discourse analysis of visual and textual material to create comparative readings of the last decades developments in design and stimulate a discourse on its current status. As a whole, it sheds light on under-researched areas of design history while replacing them within the wider socio-cultural context.

PRAXIS – EXHIBITION OF THE CITY OF RENENS 2023 ENCOURAGEMENT PRIZE,23.11–10.12.2023,La Ferme des Tilleuls, Renens From November 23 to December 10, Ferme des Tilleuls hosts "Praxis", an exhibition by Till Seegräber and Gabriela Jaime, winners of the City of Renens 2023 Encouragement Prize. The City of Renens 2023 Encouragement Prize was awarded to two ECAL students, (Bachelor Industrial Design) and (Master Type Design). In the wake of this encounter, they have created "Praxis", an innovative collection of design objects that evoke simplicity. In an increasingly multi-faceted world that adapts to our individual needs, this exhibition invites us to reflect on the essence of objects. In so doing, it offers a counterpoint to the complexification that prevails in the field of design. By breaking down the elements of our environment, the designers have arrived at refined building blocks that can be used to design a wide range of objects. Gabriela Jaime and Till Seegräber present a series of abstract works exploring the ideas of prefabrication, grids and systems. Put out to tender each year, the artistic residencies are granted for a period of six months, and each comes with a contribution to expenses of 9,000 francs. For 2024, the Paris studio has been awarded to visual artists Romane de Watteville (1st semester) and Gina Proenza (2nd semester). The Berlin residency (2nd semester) goes to Baker Wardlaw. International artist residencies are an important means of supporting creativity and research. They encourage the development of projects with links to the two capitals concerned, and promote the influence of artists working in Vaud. To this end, the Canton of Vaud has a studio at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, and (in collaboration with the Canton of Freiburg) a studio in the multicultural Wedding district in the heart of Berlin. Residence in Paris 1st semester 2024 - Graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2020, Romane de Watteville wishes to reside in the French capital to develop a pictorial project entitled "Picture of You Staring". Focusing on formal issues, this work is centered around the theme of set design in both theater and film, as well as costume design. The residency will foster exchange and close collaboration with other artists working in textiles, ceramics and installation. 2nd semester 2024 - During her stay in Paris, Gina Proenza, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2017, will develop a project linked to the writings and documentary films (one of which is unfinished) produced by French poet Alain Gheerbrant following his travels in the Colombian Amazon during the second half of the 20th century. The artist plans to consult the archives of these journeys held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) to observe the relationship between colonial history and anthropology. Residence in Berlin 2nd semester 2024 - During his stay in Berlin, Baker Wardlaw, graduated with a Bachelor s degree in Fine Arts in 2014, will continue the conceptual and formal exploration of his work entitled "Berlin Key / Sacred Harp". Centered on the notions of cryptography and cooperation, the artist s approach aims to establish a parallel, or even a confrontation, between the messages sometimes cryptically conveyed by works of art and the complex digital encasement to which all human communication is almost necessarily subject these days. www.vd.ch
